I always get lost in cities that have street numbers instead of names.
After 30+ years in FLA I still get lost in St. Pete. There is a 34th street
north and a 34th street south and a 34th avenue west and a 34th avenue east.
People who grow up in cities with numbered streets say, "Oh it's so easy to
get where you're going." Not for me.

Also in Fla, I used to deliver flowers. It was a nightmare. The town we
lived in had 4 Flamingo Streets, 4 Palm Avenues, 3 Gulf Blvd's., 2 Dolphin
Dr.'s all different locations!

Some of my favorite streets in a series are those with; President's
names like Jefferson, Washington etc., Trees like Maple, Elm etc. Colleges
like Yale, Princeton etc.

Carter Blvd.,Pardee Rd.,Wall St.,Gulf Blvd. Mel-O-Dee Lane, Cattle Dock
Point Rd. Neptune Blvd. presently Byers Creek Rd.)

During WW2, here in england, they took all the road signs down to confuse
the enemy if it ever invaded. I guess you lot have adopted a different
idea to achieve the same ends. ;-)

Mick, I'm sure you noticed that here, in New England, they never put
the signs up to begin with. And if they did, they took a long,
straight stretch of road and changed the name somewhere around the
middle.

You're dead right. How could I have forgotten my one major complaint about
New England. No signs. Especially in Boston.

Where else could you come to a fork in the road and see a sign for your
destination, smack in the middle with nothing to indicate if you should
go left or right. Still, I suppose i should be grateful there was a sign
at all. At least it meant we were on the right road. Up to that point
anyway. <lol>

I was on vacation once, and driving around a town where the signs showed the
street you were already on, rather than the cross street. Can't remember the
name of the place, or I'd warn you.

I was so relieved to be driving around at home, where all the major cross
streets have clearly visible signs.

I got confused enough in some places over there, with the stret you are
*on* being named at each junction. Took some getting used to that did.

Yeah. The signs here leave a lot to be desired. They are
nowhere to be seen when you really want them.

Now to Stan's post. I'll try to remember some of the streets
I have lived on. (It was fun reading Stan's list.) Tower
Rd., Massachusetts Avenue, Ranleigh Rd., North Hancock St. (as
in John Hancock), Waumbeck Rd., School St., Symphony Rd. (as
in the Boston Symphony Orchestra), Harvard St. (as in the
University), Craigie St., whatever street I lived on in Japan
(I'll try to remember), Richdale Ave., Holland St.,
Westminster Ave., Rice St., etc....

This sure is a roaming crowd. :) I lived on Greenhurst Ave, St.
Lawrence St., Minnesota Ave, Meadow Lane, East Eighth St, Lafayette St,
Main St, North Pearl St, Elmwood Ave, Franklin St (two different
numbers), Carolina St, Porter Ave, E. Delevan Ave, Virgil Ave, Kenmore
Ave, Stony Point Road, a dirt road with no name, a second dirt road
with no name, two numbered streets in Cape Coral, Florida (don't
remember the street numbers), Fish Road, and now Dogwood Court. Whew!
I'm worn out just at the thought of all that moving. LOL

Well, you should be the nearsighted assistant scoutmaster trying to
navigate in Washington, DC. Where the streets are numbered and
lettered, the streets that matter anyway. I could not read the map
with my glasses on, and could not see the street signs with my glasses
off, and the bus was being driven by the scoutmaster, WHO REFUSED TO
STOP LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO LOCATE US ON THE MAP.

I now can say, with some certantity that "1" Street and "1" Street (two
different streets) are on either side of the Capitol. The other two
sides of the Capitol are bounded by Independence and Constitution. The
next two streets beyond Indpepndence and Constitution are "A" Street,
followed by "B" (2), "C" (2) ...... The pair after the 1's are 2's,
followed by a pair of 3's, 4's ......

To navigate in DC you either drive on lettered streets, or numbered
streets. If you end up on any other kind of street, path, or trail you
must immediately get off of it and back to the numbers and letters. If
you are at 10th & B, NW, and you wish to get to 8th and I, SE you must
go South on the numbers and East on the letters crossing, at some point
A Street(West and East), 9th, 8th (North), 7th (North and South), 6th
(North and South) etc, etc., until you reach your destination. Easy,
isn't it?

You must have had a *very* big house. Or maybe you just moved a lot. ;-)

Salt Lake City has a simple enough numbered system. I once lived at 1019
East 17th South St. That was ten blocks East of the Mormon Temple and 17
blocks South of it.
